Jamie Crow, executive director of Elmhurst, The House of Friendship in Wheeling, has been elected president of the West Virginia Assisted Living Association, an affiliate of the Assisted Living Federation of America (AFLA).

Crow has served on the WVALA board of directors since 2012. The organization’s primary focus is the education and training of administrators and staff in the assisted living community. In addition, the organization represents a unified voice for providers and consumers in order to enhance the industry in West Virginia.

In her new position, Crow plans to work towards growing the WVALA by encouraging many small facility operators to join the organization. “There’s great opportunities to network and learn from our peers in the field. We also will update our website to make us more visible, user friendly and more informative,” Crow said.

She noted that there are 104 assisted living residences in the state, three residential care communities, with a total of 3,135 assisted living beds and 140 residential care beds. Although the numbers are down from nine years ago, there is expected to be continued growth in the industry due to the increasing numbers of baby boomers seeking those services.

Crow has served as executive director of Elmhurst for nearly nine years. During her tenure she has overseen the construction of a new four-story wing to the historic senior residence, increasing the capacity to 48 residents. This year Elmhurst is celebrating 125 years of continuous service to the area’s senior population, providing fine, affordable independent and assisted living housing for men, women, and couples. As a licensed assisted living residence, Elmhurst provides help with tasks of daily living with a staff that includes two registered nurses and resident assistance on duty 24-7, Crow notes.

A graduate of West Liberty State College, Crow received a master’s degree in social work from West Virginia University. Prior to joining Elmhurst, Crow served as executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Upper Ohio Valley from 1991-2006. At Elmhurst, she has served as instructor for social work students from Bethany College and mentored student interns from area institutions of higher learning.

Elmhurst is located on the site of the historic Victorian Samuel S. Bloch home on National Road in Wheeling’s Pleasant Valley neighborhood. The Bloch mansion was donated to the organization in 1940 by the Bloch family. In 1941, the first modern addition was constructed, followed by a modernization project in the 1970s. Residents enjoy independent and assisted living in private accommodations with private baths.

Elmhurst’s New Van Has Arrived

Elmhurst unveiled its new 8-passenger, 2015 Toyota Sienna van in July, thanks to the generosity of all who contributed to our Van Campaign. We especially thank the Elizabeth Stifel Kline Foundation for its generous $15,000 matching donation. Residents are enjoying their outings more than ever, especially with two vans available.IMG_3023

Elizabeth Stifel Kline Foundation Donates $15,000

The Friends of Elmhurst is pleased to announce that the Elizabeth Stifel Kline Foundation has donated a $15,000 matching grant to the Friends’ campaign to raise funds for a new transportation van.

“This is a significant gift to our campaign and we sincerely appreciate the Elizabeth Stifel Kline Foundation’s generosity. It certainly boosts our efforts,” commented Anita Carenbauer, co-chairperson of the Friends.

The campaign total currently stands at $23,951. The Friends hope to increase the total raised to at least $30,000 to replace the existing van that is approximately 15 years old.

Residents and friends of Elmhurst have provided initial funds for the van project, according to Jamie Crow, Elmhurst executive director. Crow noted, “The new van will provide a more comfortable access for our residents with a center aisle and two sliding doors. The Foundation’s support of our project will help make this a reality very soon.”

Contributions may be made out to Elmhurst and sent to The Friends of Elmhurst, c/o Elmhurst, The House of Friendship, 1228 National Road, Wheeling.
