An Evening Under the Elms Celebrates Elmhurst Aug.15

A festive “Evening Under the Elms,” will be hosted Saturday, Aug. 15 at 7:00 p.m. on the lawn at Elmhurst, The House of Friendship in Wheeling in celebration of its 125th year of continuous service to the senior residents of the community.

Anita Carenbauer, Elmhurst board member, and husband Frank are co-chairs of the Friends of Elmhurst organization who are hosting the event. Anita noted that Elmhurst, a non-profit, has been providing senior living accommodations since 1890.

Jay Frey, Elmhurst board vice president and co-chair of the event host committee added, “This milestone anniversary calls for a celebration. Our committee has planned a wonderful summer evening of music, fine food, a fabulous Oglebay golf package prize and exclusive silent auction gift items under tents on the side lawn of Elmhurst.”

Honorary co-chairpersons for the evening are Stuart and Stephanie Bloch. Bloch’s great-grandfather, Bloch Brothers’ Tobacco magnate Samuel S. Bloch, built the Elmhurst mansion. His children donated the home to the the West Virginia Home for Aged Women, in 1940. The organization’s mission soon expanded to welcome men and couples as residents. Samuel Bloch’s wife, Bertha Prager Bloch, was a board member of the original organization in the late 1890s.

The event’s festivities will feature gaily festooned round tables under white tents on the lawn, an elegant array of hors d’oeuvres, and an open bar. Music will be provided by Aqui Tango for listening and dancing. White twinkling lights will shine from trees on the lawn.

To reflect the Bloch family heritage, Friends of Wheeling re-enactors Jeanne Finstein and Ed Phillips will portray Bertha and Samuel Bloch in period costumes.

Coordinating the unique, elegant gift auctions are Mary Beth Hughes and Charlotte Karges. Other members of the planning committee include Christin Byrum, Anita and Frank Carenbauer, Hydie Friend and Michael Hires.

Proceeds from the anniversary fundraiser will complete funding for the purchase of a new transport van for residents and provide initial funds to restore the columns on the front porch of the historic Bloch mansion. Event sponsors to date are WesBanco, AEP, Felton CPA, Jay Frey and Michael Hires, Glessner & Associates, McKinley Carter Wealth Services, Oglebay Resort, Anita and Frank Carenbauer, H. E.
